They find a menu full of broad categories. None of those options clearly tells them where pricing belongs.

They click Services, go back, and try More.

The website has the information they need. Finding it may be the problem.

A confusing menu can turn a quick visit into a guessing game. Customer end up opening pages they don’t need just to find the right one.

1. Start With the Words in the Menu

Menu labels can make sense to the people who created the website while leaving everyone else guessing.

“Solutions” might contain several services. “Resources” could lead to blog posts, downloadable documents, or product guides. Someone visiting for the first time may have to click through just to understand what each contains.

Don’t make visitors decode the menu. Pricing means pricing.

The wording should match the destination, not the terminology used internally by the business.

There’s another issue worth checking. Check for categories that cover the same ground. Changing their names won’t help much if visitors still can’t tell them apart.

2. What Belongs in the Main Menu?

Not every page needs a place in the header.

Every new page seems to deserve a menu link. Eventually, header gets crowded, making the links easier to overlook.

Review the current pages first. Put related topics together and reserve the main menu for destinations visitors look for most often.

Some pages can sit outside the main menu. Internal links and the footer provide other ways to reach it.

Be careful with nested menus, though. When a basic service takes several clicks to find, give it more prominent place.

3. Dropdown Menus Become Frustrating

A dropdown can look fine but cause trouble as soon as someone tries to use it.

Test each dropdown with a mouse. A submenu that opens too far away or disappears during movement can make a link difficult to select.

Try moving from the main menu to each option. Visitors should be able to move through menu items with a keyboard and need to move between links and see which option is selected.

On phones, menu controls need to be easy to tap without taking over the whole display.

Try the menu yourself before approving it.

4. People Can Enter the Site on Any Page

A search result can take someone straight to an article or service page without ever opening the homepage.

What helps them move forward?

Someone who lands on an article needs clear route to related information. Breadcrumbs show where the current page sits within the website.

Search is another option on larger websites.

Each tool has a different job. Breadcrumbs show location, internal links connect related content, and search helps locate a specific page. They shouldn’t be used to compensate for a main menu that makes little sense.

5. Mobile Navigation Can Expose Problems in the Header

A desktop menu may fit comfortably across the top of the page. The logo and contact link can leave little room for navigation.

Reducing the gaps may not be enough. Hiding navigation behind a menu frees space.

Check what happens once the menu opens. Are the links easy to tap? Can visitors close it without confusion? Find whether the open menu leaves enough room to view the page and use its controls.

Tap targets and spacing problems are easier to spot that way.

6. Find Problem Before Rebuilding the Menu

A few changes to the menu are enough.

Give a first-time visitor a task. Watch which options they choose. If they keep choosing the wrong section, categories may not need reorganizing.

Traffic reports show which pages people visit. Note where they pause or get lost.

A clearer label may be all that’s needed. A complete menu overhaul may not be needed.

Navigation and Search Visibility

Search engines follow links from one page to another. Descriptive link text makes it easier to judge whether a page is worth opening.

Keep key service pages easy to reach. A useful service page shouldn’t require digging through unrelated sections.

More links alone won’t lift a page in search results. What matters is whether those links are useful.

Check Menu Before Making Changes

Turn off search and navigate the site using its menus alone. Repeat it on your phone and note where the process becomes difficult.

Pay attention to the moments when you guess, backtrack, or open a category only to discover it isn’t what you expected.

Those are the problems worth fixing.

A visitor opens a business website looking for its pricing page.
