The customer list, however, never appears.

The API returns the customer list without a request error. Most entries look fine, apart from one older account with a missing company object. One legacy record contains “company”: null. The failure occurs when the component reaches customer.company.name. Since company is null for that account, JavaScript cannot read its name property.

The table can fail as soon as rendering reaches that particular entry.

The customer hasn’t disappeared from the database. The problem is that the component assumes every customer has a company attached to their account.

1. Find Out Why the Customer List Won’t Load

Begin with browser console. Error message identifies which property the component tries to access.

Next, select the customer request under Network and examine the returned JSON.

A recently created customer might include a company object in its response.

An account created before that information was collected might instead return:

`{ “company”: null }`

The two responses have different structures.

This can happen after a database migration, when older customer accounts don’t contain fields added later. A signup form that doesn’t require company details can also create this situation. That value isn’t necessarily a data error.

The test database may have hidden the problem. Older or incomplete records can expose assumptions that those tests never covered.

2. Should the Missing Value Be an Error?

If company information is optional, the component can handle it without attempting to read a property from `null`.

For example:

`customer.company?.name ?? “Not provided”`

That handles this particular case. The table can display the customer without a company name.

But a fallback isn’t always the right answer.

A missing company name might be acceptable for an individual customer. A business account without its required company identifier could indicate a problem with the stored data.

Decide which fields can be empty before adding fallback values throughout the interface. Otherwise, the interface may start displaying blank values where the team actually needs to investigate an incomplete record.

3. The Same Record May Break Another Screen

Fixing the customer table doesn’t guarantee the rest of the application is safe.

The profile page might read `company.name`. The invoice screen could access `company.billingAddress`. Another component might expect the company object to exist before displaying account details.

Repeating the same checks across several components creates more places to maintain. A developer might fix the customer table and overlook the invoice screen. Both need to handle a missing company object before reading its properties.

Handle the response before passing customer records to the components. Define how applications should represent missing company details.

An error boundary can stop a rendering failure from taking down a larger part of the interface. It won’t repair the customer record.

4. Try the Older Records Before Launch

Testing with newly created customers won’t reveal much if all their fields are populated.

Load an older account with no company information. The missing company name should not break the table. An absent field required by the business should trigger a suitable warning.

When reviewing a React.js development company in Maharashtra, ask how its team tests components against incomplete API responses. A React.js development company in India should explain how it handles optional fields.

The API can return a successful response while the component still fails. Test records with null values and missing properties to catch rendering failures before they reach production.

The dashboard loads normally for the support team.
